More about Shaun

For over 20 years Books illustrated has collaborated with Shaun, including his work in many exhibitions and selling his illustration. In 2010, we curated The Lost Thing: Book to Film exhibition shown first at Gasworks Arts Park (the animation won an Academy Award the following year). This exhibition has toured Australia ever since and part of it was included in our Hello! from Australia exhibition shown in 12 venues in South Korea.

Celebrated by readers of all ages for his unique viewpoints and odd juxtaposition of the familiar and surreal, Shaun stirs our own thoughtfulness. He is a philosophical visual storyteller, a brilliant technician and a master wordsmith. His illustrated stories take the form that best suit them – short stories, comics, graphic novels, picture books, animated film. His illustration medium and technique vary too – sometimes painterly, sometimes sculptural. A number of his books have inspired collaborative works with artists from various disciplines.

Shaun Tan has been recognised with the most prestigious Awards nationally and internationally over his career. In 2011, he was awarded the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for his outstanding contribution to children’s literature on the international stage and the Dromkeen Medal for his outstanding contribution in Australia. In 2020, he was awarded the British Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration for Tales from the Inner City.
