Ilse van Garderen Careless Water is a reprise of my first Artist’s Book (made in 2000). It takes its inspiration from a prose-poem by Gertrude Stein of the same name (Tender Buttons 1914). The text is written in the spontaneous ‘stream of consciousness’ style embraced by the author.
A seemingly bewildering jumble of words, without evident meaning, inherent in which, however, is the suggestion of a metaphor alluding to transcending limitations. The artwork consisting of hand-coloured linocuts are my personal response to the text. Although, I have only this one picture book published at the present, I still have some stories rattling around in my head, so who knows…| Behind the Studio Door |
