Books Illustrated was established in 1988 as a gallery for original Australian book illustration in Melbourne with changing exhibitions often featuring particular artists with newly launched books.
For 20 years the annual Not So Shortlist Exhibition, celebrating the Children`s Book Award winners and beyond, was a focus for the book world in Melbourne.
Particularly memorable also were the miniature exhibitions held every couple of years featuring tiny framed works by well-known illustrators from around Australia: There was Strike a Light ! with match box size pictures in 1999; The Artist /The Illustrator, 2002; The Recession Exhibition in 2000 and in 2008, Weeny Wonders for the CBCA National Conference, 2008.
Books Illustrated continually increased it`s focus of promoting Australian children`s book illustration by curating exhibitions for regional Australian galleries and overseas venues, particularly in Asia.
In 2008 Books Illustrated was approached by the Australian Publishers Association to create an exhibition to assist in the promotion and rights sales of Australian picture books at the Bologna Book Fair.
This promotional exhibition, Hello from Australia! continues to be a feature of the Australian stand at Bologna. Other exhibitions and projects undertaken include those in Japan, Korea and China.
Between 2010 and 2013 Books Illustrated was the agent for a national tour of Jeannie Baker's exhibition Mirror - the artwork for her award-winning picture book. For The National Year of Reading in 2012 Books Illustrated toured Alison Lester's Are we there yet? exhibition to venues in every state and territory in Australia.
