Jeannie Baker: Mirror

Books Illustrated is privileged to be assisting Jeannie Baker in touring her exhibition Mirror.

The Exhibition

Mirror showcases the unique collage illustrations of well-known Australian author/illustrator Jeannie Baker from her latest innovative picture book of the same name. Extensive work goes into Jeannie's collages. She starts by drawing images, which are used as a guide. The collages are constructed in layers starting with a wooden baseboard. She uses natural and artificial materials including sand, earth, clay, paints, vegetation, paper, fabric, wool, tin and plastic.
Some of the tiny three-dimensional framed pictures are backlit, heightening the sense of time and place.

The exhibition is cleverly designed to be viewed to mirror the narrative of her book – the stories wrap around the room, one to the right, one to the left - to meet in the middle where you actually view yourself in a real life sized mirror! After a short introduction and authors note in both English and Arabic, the narrative is conveyed wordlessly.

The story takes place over a day in the lives of two boys and their families. An Australian family, whose way of life strikes a familiar chord, and a family from far away Morocco whose life is very different. As we read we discover the simple truth that despite these differences we are also similar. We are the mirror of each other.
About the work, Jeannie says that the idea came from travelling in a country that is very different from her own. "At the time in my own country there was much political poisoning of attitudes towards foreigners and foreignness. But travelling alone in remote Morocco, a woman 'stranger' myself, I was met with such friendliness and generosity from 'strangers'. The idea for the work was right there: that outward appearances may be very different, but the inner person of a 'stranger' may not be a stranger at all."
