Discovering The Lost Thing – book to film

The exhibition, curated by Books Illustrated Gallery, begins with sketches, dummy book and final original illustrations for the picture book The Lost Thing and then moves through the collaborative process, with members of the film team at Passion Pictures, to create the animated film – a ten year creative journey!

The process of developing the animation is shown through character sketches, pencil storyboards, soft pastel stills, texture paintings and a marvelous DVD showing the complex developmental stages for Utopia - growing the animation from the early structural to the final extraordinary 3D masterpiece – incorporating alternate and experimental pieces of film and sound.

The Lost Thing animated film has won many film awards in Australia and around the world including Best Short Film at the 34th Annecy International Animation Festival in France and the 2011 Oscar for short animation.

A DVD of The Lost Thing animation was released in Nov 2010.

Shaun Tan is the multi award-winning author and illustrator of many illustrated books including The Arrival, The Red Tree, Tales from Outer Suburbia and The Bird King.
